Shipwright

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Shipwright to support a unique US Navy program on Diego Garcia. The role involves constructing, repairing, and maintaining marine vessels and components according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Key responsibilities

• Construct, repair, and maintain vessels using blueprints, ship plans, and technical specifications.
• Lay out reference points on shipways and dry docks with transits, levels, plumb bobs, and measuring tapes.
• Build and install keel blocks, bilge blocks, cradles, shoring, and support structures.
• Fabricate, fit, and install wooden structural components and metal fittings using hand and power tools.
• Inspect structural components for alignment, fit, and compliance.
• Operate woodworking machinery, portable power tools, lifting and material handling equipment safely.
• Support dry‑dock operations, vessel launches, recoveries, and maintenance projects.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least five years of experience as a Shipwright or in marine construction, carpentry, or ship repair.
• Valid driver’s license, passport (minimum one‑year validity) and ability to obtain required visas and security clearances.
• Ability to read, speak, and comprehend English for contract requirements and emergency procedures.

Required skills

• Use of transits, levels, plumb bobs, and measuring tapes for layout.
• Operation of woodworking machinery and portable power tools.
• Installation of metal fittings, plates, bulkheads, and structural hardware.
• Interpretation of blueprints, ship plans, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
